We couldn't have asked for better weather to go and watch the Blancpain GT Series at Silverstone. Blue skies and warm sun made for a fast track and comfortable viewing.
The pits were full of Lamborgini hospitality guests in their Huracan Performante's and Aventador SV's. 20+ of the Italian super car's lined up in a row. The display of these extreme road cars was spectacular. Nordschliefe record breaking V10 monsters in dozens of colours, all lined up like skittles sweets. Having so many of them together was an amazing example of what different paint colours and finishes do to a car. Highlighting the body shape, and changing the car's overall personality. Some made the Huracan look even more evil. Whilst others turned them into cute puppy cars.
When we arrived the Lamborghini Super Trofeo's were already on circuit. Their naturally aspirated V10's tearing the otherwise quiet atmosphere.
Having never seen the Super Trofeo's before, it was a real treat to finally hear a grid full of Lamborghini's. The racing was good, but only a precursor to the later Blancpain racing. Despite this, the cars are every bit as serious, and the driving was great to watch.
But it was GT3 time. There was no mistaking the thunder of the AMG V8's. A deep burbling roar, like no other engine on track. A stark contrast to the bandsaw like Porsche's or the barking Huracan Super Trofeo's. All of the cars were absolutely stunning. Sharing the same engine as the AMG's, the new Bentley GT3 was out on track. Sean's favourite. We wandered around grabbing some photos, before heading over to the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club) stand for a longer, sat down viewing session. My personal favourite car was the Ferrari 488 GT3: the sound of the turbo's dumping their pressure as the car comes into a braking zone was addictive.
Lunch time meant it was pit walk time. Sean and myself took advantage of them to go and look at the cars up close. Walking around the pits is a surreal experience. You are only a few feet away from the mechanic's working hard to bring the cars back to life, and is a fantastic look into how much effort goes into getting a grid full of competitive cars together. An amusing sight was the mechanic tasked with removing all the stones and gravel from the cars various vents/body panels. I found something funny about a few kilos of pebbles and small rocks stacked neatly in a pile next to the cars in an otherwise technologically advanced garage.
After getting some food, it was time to watch some Formula Renault. We made our way to another grandstand to get a good vantage point down onto the straight and watched them zip around the track. A few yellow flags early on meant it was slow to get going, but it built up towards the end and offered some good racing: the corners often 3 cars wide.
We took some more photos and headed back to our cars to head home, but not before watching the Super Trofeo's for a few more laps. Their noise is truly addictive. Perfect weather for a very enjoyable day.
